Ornamental jewelry has been used as far back as the 3000 BC. Ancient Egyptians have long been adorning themselves in necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, pendants and head pieces as discovered in Tutankhamun’s tomb. Through this excavation it was discovered that ancient Egyptians garnished themselves in ornaments constructed of rich materials such as gold and turquoise jewelry which symbolizes good fortune and happiness. It is believed that through materials, certain characteristics can be promoted. For example, the emerald is a sign of eternal love, beauty, and harmony, while the ruby symbolizes immortality. These beliefs are still shared by many today.

Consistently throughout history kings and queens have showered themselves in rare and precious ornamental pieces. A peasant would not be able to afford to buy jewelry as it was a non-essential cost therefore lending jewelry was perceived by many as a way to show status. It isn’t uncommon to see people in power embellished in jewelry. Generally speaking, the more extravagant the piece the pricier it becomes, hence the element of prestige. Years later, with the introduction of Hollywood, people have often times believed that if they wore similar expensive jewelry and attire emulating an actor/actress that this would evoke a glamorous Hollywood lifestyle. Custom jewelry dates back centuries as the only method available was to make a piece by hand. Jewelry making was a trade that craftsmen would become skilled in, but would eventually be overtaken in the modern world by machine production. There are still artisans skilled in jewelry making today, but the bulk of jewelry is produced in mass. Jewelry artisans, although rare according to past standards, aren’t hard to find. Simply by word of mouth or an Internet search, one can find a craftsman that can produce just about any custom piece. Although not necessary, it is recommended that an artisan be skilled in working with the medium the custom piece would be constructed of, and simply for protection it is also smart to obtain a written guarantee.

From sterling jewelry to diamond jewelry, handcrafted pieces don’t have to be expensive. Although handcrafted jewelry may be more expensive than a machine produced item, it depends almost entirely on the materials used in the creation of the piece. In today’s world this means that regardless of wealth or status fine jewelry can be purchased at a jewelers store by any income bracket.

Today jewelry is worn by all, from women and men to children regardless of wealth. Mens jewelry is becoming increasingly more popular. It isn’t uncommon to see a blue-collar working man wearing earrings and jewelers necklaces, whereas it used to be that if they wore anything it would simply be a wedding band. Jewelry has become an element of fashion, it seems as though an outfit isn’t complete without the finishing touch of a pendent or bangle bracelet. This simply goes to show that fashion is ever changing, from pocket watches to fashion jewelry, the adornment of fashion jewelry seems to be here to stay.
