How can I be sure that I am buying a conflict-free diamond?

Since the early 90’s countries such as Canada and the United States have taken action against blood diamonds by implementing laws and orders banning the trade of conflict diamonds. Although different governments have taken steps toward the ban of blood diamonds, it is suggested that consumers ask a series of questions. Ask the sales person how you can be sure that the diamonds they sell are conflict free, and where they purchased the diamonds from? Ask for the company’s policy on purchasing diamonds, and lastly ask for a written guarantee from their suppliers. There isn’t a definite way to tell if a diamond is a conflict diamond, but chances are if a company is able answer all of the questions above they are selling safe diamonds.

Who can I contact for a custom made piece of jewelry?

It is important to research a craftsman skilled in the medium specific to the custom piece desired to ensure quality. Word of mouth is a great way to find an artisan that is trustworthy, and although it may be risky the Internet is a great source for finding a jewelry craftsman as well. Make sure to ask for a guarantee to protect against frauds.

Why is a custom made ornament more expensive than a machine produced piece of jewelry?

The difference between a custom piece of jewelry and a machine produced piece is time. When a piece is custom made, an artisan has to put in hours to create a one-of-a-kind ornament that is specific to a consumer’s need and wants. A machine created piece of jewelry is produced in mass and doesn’t require special attention from an artisan. Just as an original painting is more costly than a reprint, the same concept applies for custom jewelry.
